ALBERTA'S BIG SKY CANOLA FIELDS SUMMER 2013

As far as the eye can see…canola fields blanket the land like patchwork quilting…and over all, the indefatigable big sky of Alberta…

  1. This is beautiful. I’ve been reading about canola. Did you know that almost all canola is genetically engineered? An interesting bit of trivia. From what I can gather, the jury is out on whether its harmful to consume. But all the buzz about genetically modified food makes me worry about people and bees. buzz.

    • Further to your interesting bit of trivia brenda…I went to the snopes site to see if they had anything to say about canola and unfortunately they first post a misleading and lengthy fear-mongering email stating pretty much what you’re saying.

However, it’s refuted with more up-to-date information directly below with an article that give details about how canola actually came to be…it’s not actually genetically engineered but rather the cross pollination of rapeseed (a member of the mustard family) and at least one other plant…It has been carefully monitored to make it probably one of the safest cooking oils available (and is called canola because it’s Canadian and a more palatable name than “rapeseed” as might be expected)…the details are on the snopes site and I’m going to look for more and I’ll post them on my site.

It is definitely one of Alberta’s cash crops so I’d hate for the wrong info to be circulating around about it…

If you took the time to read my words, I'd love to read yours...
